T'was a much more interesting and enjoyable trip than I expected it to be. 3 weeks in Yangon was as good as any of the student exchange programs I've ever been for. Ate a lot of good shit (literally too) :P

I miss the days when so many things were inspiring and welcoming to me. Even blowing up a piece of human shit with fireworks would excite me.

Though I am also self-centered like most people, I am fortunate enough to be able to identify pretentious indulgences for what they are, and hopefully avoid most of it. I no longer envy anyone other than very talented musicians (can't help that one) :P

My damned college has dragged my graduation process to it's limits.

I feel unproductive and am desperately looking for a career path that I would love.

These loosely connected sinkers drain significant amounts of my inspiration and liveliness.

However I must admit that I'm very fortunate to have that very special someone who I can look forward to enjoying life and travelling with, my family and my awesome bitches keep me going.

Perhaps I need a change of attitude and a new perspective on life.

I need to be more loving, grateful, assertive and responsible. I need to write better songs and take better pictures. I need more money.

I need reinspiration!

We went for our usual hillhike at our new favorite hill and the scenery was beautiful as ever. It turned out to be an extremely interesting experience!

That's my foot right there.. just before falling.

I can't remember a thing about the fall, all I remember was that I was holding on to the rope and the next thing I knew I woke up lying on my back hearing my friends and Iris yelling down to me from far away. I didn't really feel any pain but I could feel that my left foot was out of place and that I was bleeding heavily.

While Foong and the rest stayed back to keep me awake, Iris and Jeff ran down the hill in 1 1/2 hours (half the time we took to get up) and met with Kok Weng and then ran back up another route to look for me.

It was really tough getting up the steep slopes but they climbed as fast as they could. They didn't manage to find me but thankfully the sound of my voice(apparently I was singing) lead some other hikers to find me.

Eventually the firemen came and carried me down on a stretcher. Took them about 2 hours to get to me and 3 hours to get me down but they did a good job and got me to the ambulance safely.

As you can see I had fern decorations around me.

Those who saw me fall said that when I hung on to the rope, it swung to a wierd angle but I was still ok, and then I looked down thought I could probably land safely if I released the rope. But I was wrong and the ground I landed on gave way and I had a combination of sliding and falling for about 200ft.

I dislocated my left foot and fractured my back. Could barely move for the first few days in the hospital.

They couldn't get to me because there was a 5m drop a few meters from where I started sliding so they could only yell. They could only hear me sliding for what felt like a couple of minutes before the sound faded away as I slid further.

To summarize the rest, I went from the first hospital to the traditional healer to Assunta Hospital where I received my treatment. I can assure you that going around in an ambulance on Malaysian roads when you are injured isn't fun at all (but I cherish the experience).

For some reason the incident was newsworthy and everyone got a kick out of seeing it on the 8pm news :P

I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to those who helped me and accompanied me throught the crucial hours(more like painful hours) after the fall until I was sent into the OR.

Especially Iris for taking very good care of me since the fall and helped nurse me back to health. I am still amazed that she managed to do all that running around for 36 hours without sleep. Aside from the long list of things that she has done to help me when I was handicapped, she gave me a neat mohawk and lots of TLC. I wouldn't have been able to even clean my own ass properly

if it wasn't for you.

Jeff for busting your legs and feet to run down with iris to look for me (both of them were having difficulties standing up and sitting down for a few days because their tighs were sore) and for spending so much time accompanying me in the hospital and at home. *da kei with me samo lol

Also Kok Weng for rushing all the way from church to the hillside and for busting his ass for me.

My folks for footing the hospital bill and caring for me.

Foong, Josh, Sheila and Mimi for accompanying me the whole day and for keeping me awake while rescuers searched for me. *the gay jokes and ambiguous balloon cheered me up*

Kevin, Andrew and Ramax(thanx for the wheelchair wheelies in the hospital) for helping me run errands and like taking me to the hospital and stuff.

and thanks to those who visitd me, the moral support and gifts were very helpful!

I hope I didn't miss anyone out.

I would also like to thank the kind hikers for finding me and helping me out when they heard me. I don't know who you are but I hope you get my thanx.

This was truly a very valueble experience. I can now cross "Nearly Die in Accident but Survive" out of my bucket list (list of things to do before I kick the bucket). I am also reminded that I have wonderful people around me :)

Being semi-bedridden and staying at home a lot for 2 weeks made me realize that I can never live a life that is any less exciting than it currently is and be satisfied with it. Life was lame when all I did was within the safety of my home.

I am still recovering but one thing is for sure, I will climb again once I have recovered!

Went for a 6 hour hike at Bkt Tabur in Setapak. It was fairly challenging and seemed quite dangerous but many people have been climbing it.

I worked on the song with Greg Henderson for a couple of nights to refine the song (rushing back from Penang and jumping straight into the studio at one point). Jun Han and Wee Hin helped me out in figuring out a catchy bridge chord progression and did a wonderful job on the instrumentals for the song and everything fell into place pretty well.

Writing the song was relatively easy compared to songs for the band partly because I received guidance and encouragement from Greg, Iris when I was developing my ideas.

I also received the tear drawing, pee jerking, and steam fulfilling support from my friends and family. Especially those who were there with me that nite and Iris who drove me there for sound check. Kenrick, Iris and Rama was also generous enough to sms-vote repeatedly for me! also Thanx to those who smsed for me from outside the event, you know who you are!

I have finally received my first corporate sponsorship in the form of garments. Feels good to know that our toilet song gave them enough reason to let me choose and take home a pair of jeans and T-shirt from their outlet in the Gardens.

Big thanx to those who contributed to the success of this side project (namely Wee hin n Jun Han for the amazing instrumentals, Iris for helping me decide the vocal melody and everyone else who gave us their feedback on the song.

Thank you Levi's for the goods, hopefully we will win stuff at the finals!

I found this cricket in the cricket box (tarantula/scorpion feed). Some other cricket chewed off it's abdomen till there was almost nothing left but it was still able to walk around if placed the right side up.

when u flip it over it can't turn itself over but it's still alive.

Really impressive stuff!

Aural Joint - Meet the Band gig

Last weekend was a hectic one. 2 gigs 2 days in a row with the Levi's event, exchange student arrival and shopping trip snugged in between. I think it all went pretty well thanx to the support from Iris, all the great friends who came to support us and the band that made it all happen!

Meet the Band at Gold Hill Club, Kepong. There were superb chinese bands playing there and even a Jack Black (chinese version). I was impressed. The sound system was great too.

Jun Han popped his rocker cherry by slashing his finger with the guitar strings and bleeding all over his guitar half way through our set!!! click to enlarge the pic to see the splatter!!

Update*
I spoke to Levi's earlier today and they said that they and the producers are fine with us working with them this weekend leaving for a couple of hours for the gigs each day. What a relief!

Dilemma

We recently did a last minute writing recording of an original song for the Levi's Live Unbuttoned contest. I wrote the lyrics and vocal melody with my guitar and Jun Han and Wee Hin (my lead guitarist and bassist) wrote guitar, bass and drum parts over night and did mixing the following afternoon. Submitted on the last minute!!

The best part of the recording is that we recorded the vocals in Jun Han's toilet!!
*so that my mic would capture a fuller sound*

That was 2 weeks ago. Just this morning, I received a call from Levi's congratulating me that we have been short listed as top four to work with Paul Morrison and Greg Henderson in the studios to work on our song for the finals.

This came to me as good news and bad news. Good news is that we gain publicity, a chance to gig for the Levi's event and a chance to win the prize money.

Bad news is that the dates clash with our 2 other gigs on the 9 and 10 of August, and also with Iris's Penang trip for her Convocation over there. I've really been looking forward to all those events and now I might have to forgo them just for this. I'm TORN!!!!!!!!!

Scrubbing a Mite Infested Tarantula Clean

I recently discovered a mite infestation on one of my tarantulas. She's a Malaysian species (Cyriopagopus sp. "blue") and currently has a 7" legspan.

So wrangled her in with the help of Kevin an Iris (to pry her sticky legs off her tank) to scrub the mites off. I have lost about 7 tarantulas due to mite infestations so I wasn't gona let this one go without a fight.

As you can see, I have circled(in red) the mite's on the tarantula. They normally gather at the beginnings of the fangs, under and between the fangs and at the joints of a tarantula.

I scrapped them off with 2 pieces of paper and blew them away once they lost their grip

Finally I swiped between her fangs like a credit card to clear off some mites between the fangs.

She's been doing great since the big cleanup :)

Contact Lense BBQ Hazard.. more to it

I'm sure you've seen the email warning about the heat hazard concerning contact lens wearers. IT goes something like this:

"Those who wear contact lenses, remove them when you have to attend a BBQ party or whatsoever that got to do with flames... I heard a horrible true story about contact lenses.... It happened to a 21 year old guy, he wore a pair of contact lenses during a barbecue party. While, he was barbecuing, he stared at the fire charcoals. After a few seconds, he started to scream for help and moved rapidly, jumping up and down. No one in the party knew why... When he arrived at the Hospital, the doctor said he'll be blind permanently courtesy of the contact lenses that he had worn. Contact lenses are made by plastics, and the heat from the charcoal melted his contact lenses. So, tell all your friends...."

I've been a bit worried about getting close to really hot places like the sauna and bbqs (but I still did anyway, just felt worried while I was at it) since I read that a few years ago. I just got the same forwarded mail again today and decided to do some research. Turns out it's a HOAX!!

In case ur wondering, the "Tommy Hilfiger is Racist" email is also a hoax. Tommy never appeared on the Oprah show. He was only invited to come after the hoax blew up into such a huge issue so that they could set the record straight. I hate to admit it but I also believed that for more than a year until I did some research and found THIS a couple of months back.

Bungee, Bridge Jumping and Water Skiing

The bungee jump.

Green markings for bridge jumping , black for bungee. I went for both but bungee was still the most exciting one!

Bridge jumping is where they tie you to an adjescent bridge and have you jump off and swing like a pendulum. T'was a nut shrinking experience and so much adrenaline was pumped through my veins that I felt like dancing to the techno music being played at the jumping area!

We had to go through a "production line" before jumping. First there was the harness dude who strapped the harness on..

then the legs thingie dude who strapped the legs thingie on..

then the "leg thingies" dude who was also the "get you through a small hole at the side of the bridge" dude will help you get feet first through that diamond shaped hole instead of over it..

*at this point I was asking the dudes about what possible stunts I could do while jumping*

Throughout the process a nice lady walks around with a camcorder and captures the preparation and jump on DVD

Then they place you at the edge and ask for your name. And you hear something like this: OK KENNETH FROM MALAYSIA, GET READY TO JUMP IN 3, 2, 1.. (push)

*at this point I wanted to jump as much as I didn't want to and no stunts aside from the jump itself was attempted*

I couldn't even scream when I first plunged down. It was like my body froze. Then I was cracked like a whip and that felt like all my blood were in my hands. I bounced back up to a few meters away from where I jumped off and this time around I went down yelling "FUUUUUUCK!!!"

It was a great experience and unfortunately I did not wear any thing on my feet and had to hike back up barefooted which was a fairly painful experience.

We were also fortunate enough to go for water skiing. This is the view from the bucky (pick up truck kinda vehicle) that we travelled on most of the time whenever we needed to get anywhere in the beach area.

Took me 3 days to finally learn to water ski, and yes it is a lot harder than it looks! Firstly it is challenging just to get into the correct starting position cz the skis are really heavy and hard to manouver in the water so we look quite silly just trying to get into position on the first 2 days.

Then you need to hold on really tightly and then the next challenge would be actually getting out of the water without losing control of the skis or grip on the rope handle. Often times my skis went in opposite directions and I end up unwillingly doing a massive split and smashing my face onto the surface of the water.

Most of the time we had to ride on the boat while others were being pulled and being wet and half naked, we were freezing our sacs off as the wind painfully shot at us

eventually I got the hang of it and managed to hold on for more than 5 minutes (i think) before having to let go out of exhaustion. It's really tiring and I was hurting in places that I never knew existed. I realy wish I could do this once a week cz I'd be really fit then.

Here are some additional pics of the beach area that I stumbled upon again.

The first one's of the FOAM that the crashing waves created. It looked exactly like bubblebath foam and felt like it too (didn't smell like it though). I stood there for a long time just looking at the foam forming.. mesmerized (was also needing to pee and was thinking about how I could use the foam to my advantage;).

Also spotted this nifty idea for a power cable or telephone line.

South Africa - recently acquired pics

I've recently got my hands on some long awaited pics of my YE trip to South Africa. So here they are.

1st off was the view from my make-shift bed looking out to the balcony of the beach house. You can hear the waves crashing and feel and smell the sea breeze all from there..

Pic of us in the "Kancil" of South Africa, damn popular car. And we sometimes have our feet sticking out from the windown like that to catch the wind.

Rocky beach that we had to make our way across to reach the fishing spot. You can see the white "bucky" (truck) we rode there on.

Some nice sea urchins I found lying around

Sea anemone. They had crystal clear water and a lot of really cool stuff in it but I didn't have a camera with me all the time so these are all I managed to capture.

Jelly fish they call the "blue eye". Pretty nasty sting that we had to watch out for when water skiing.

Preparing for snorkeling. This one was a really rough ride cz the water was shallow, the current from the waves was harsh and we were constantly trying not to get pushed against the sharp rocks. T'was a great thrill doing it though ;)

Snails cooking on the bbq. Goes damn well with salt.
